Ecommerce Brand Naming: How to Name a Product Line That Sells
Ecommerce names live or die in three places: the product image alt text, the checkout form, and the post-purchase review. This page is the operator's playbook for naming brands that compound across all three.
The three jobs an ecommerce name has to do
Every successful DTC name we have studied performs the same three jobs. If a candidate name fails any one of them, drop it.
- Earn the click. The name has to read instantly on a 320-pixel-wide mobile feed.
- Earn the receipt. The brand has to feel right next to a price tag and a credit card form.
- Earn the referral. The name has to be easy to text to a friend without typos or autocorrect drama.
Naming patterns that consistently win in DTC
These five patterns produce roughly 80% of the breakout DTC brands of the last decade.
- Founder-feeling names (Allbirds, Glossier, Casper): warm, memorable, trustworthy.
- Single-noun brands (Outdoor Voices, Mejuri, Olipop): evocative, ownable, easy to repeat.
- Modern compound names (Warby Parker, Ritual, Brightland): textured, premium-feeling.
- Place-anchored brands (Sundays, Saturdays NYC, Brooklinen): suggest lifestyle without overcommitting.
- Reinvented heritage words (Hims, Hers, Athena Club): familiar root, modern execution.
Mistakes that quietly cost DTC brands money
- Three-word names. They die in product search results and email subject lines.
- Names that depend on a clever spelling (Kween, Kase, Kollective). Reads as cheap.
- Names that are hard for support agents to spell back over a phone call.
- Names borrowed from a current trend ("Y2K", "core", "vibes"). Locks the brand into a moment.
- Names whose .com is taken by an unrelated brand with first-page Google dominance.
Shopify vs Etsy: different rules
Shopify stores live inside their own brand world — the name has to do all the lifting. Etsy stores live inside Etsy's marketplace, where category context is supplied by the platform — so descriptive names work better. "Modern Linen Co" can succeed on Etsy and fail as a standalone Shopify store.
If you plan to migrate from Etsy to Shopify within 18 months, name as if you were already on Shopify. The earlier you choose the brand-worthy name, the less SEO equity you lose in the migration.
Product line naming: when to extend, when to brand
The biggest naming decision in DTC after the main brand is whether new products carry the parent brand or get their own name. Default to the parent brand. Spin up a sub-brand only when the new product crosses a major positioning line — different buyer, different price point, different occasion.
Glossier launched Glossier Play because the price/positioning line crossed. Most extensions don't need it.
Validation checklist before launch
- Mobile-feed test: does the name read at 320px next to a product image?
- Receipt test: type the brand on a fake invoice. Does it look like a real brand?
- Voice test: leave a fake voicemail using the name. Smooth, or stumble?
- Marketplace lookup on Amazon, Etsy, and your category's leader site.
- Trademark check in class 25 (apparel), 3 (cosmetics), or whichever class fits.
Frequently asked
Should my ecommerce brand name describe the product?
No. Descriptive names dilute fast and never become category-defining. Lean evocative.
How important is the .com for a DTC brand?
Critical. DTC buyers type the brand directly more often than they Google it. Acquire the .com or rename.
