Domain selection: the three filters
Pick a domain that's short (≤12 characters), brandable (not literal), and pronounceable (no creative spellings). A domain that fails any of these three filters costs you compound growth for the life of the company.
The fourth filter — exact-match keyword — used to matter for SEO. It no longer does. Google ranks brands, not domains.
TLD extensions: a 2026 reality check
- .com — still the gold standard for trust and recall.
- .ai — fully credible for AI companies; investors no longer penalize it.
- .io / .co — strong for tech and SaaS; acceptable to most US/EU customers.
- .app — useful when an .app extension reinforces the product category.
- .xyz / .so — increasingly used by venture-backed startups, but still requires explanation.
Avoid .biz, .info, and most country-code TLDs unless you're geographically anchored.
Domain branding patterns
If the exact .com is taken, the cleanest workarounds are: get[name].com, try[name].com, [name]hq.com, [name].co, [name].ai, or a compound (get[name]app.com).
Avoid hyphens, numbers, and trailing modifiers like 'inc' or 'official' — they signal 'second-choice domain' to customers and investors.
SEO considerations
Google ranks brand strength, not keyword presence in the domain. A short brandable domain plus consistent content publishing will outrank an exact-match keyword domain within 12 months.
Domain age matters more than domain keywords. Buy early, ship content early, and let compounding work.
Future scalability
Your domain has to fit your year-five product, not just your year-one product. Avoid domains that lock you into a single category, geography, or feature.
A great brand name + a clean domain is worth the marketing cost of explaining a non-.com extension.
Where to buy domains in 2026
- Namecheap — strong overall value, clean UX, reliable renewal pricing, free WHOIS privacy.
- Porkbun — lowest sticker prices on most TLDs, generous free add-ons (WHOIS privacy, email forwarding).
- Hostinger — bundles domains with hosting if you need both; aggressive first-year pricing.
Avoid registrars that bait with cheap first-year pricing then 5× the renewal — always check renewal cost before purchase.
When you're ready to register, we recommend Namecheap, Porkbun, or Hostinger — all three are reputable and competitively priced.
Questions founders ask
Is .com still required for a serious brand?
For most consumer brands, yes — it remains the default trust signal. For AI startups, infrastructure plays, and developer tools, .ai, .io, and .dev are now fully credible.
Should I pay $5K+ for a premium domain?
Only after the business is generating revenue. Premium domains are a marketing investment, not a launch requirement. Use a clean variant (get[name].com) until the business justifies the upgrade.
How long should I register a domain for?
Two to three years upfront sends a stronger signal to search engines than one-year registrations. It also locks in pricing and removes the risk of accidental lapse.
