The Naming Decision Matrix
When a team has narrowed down to three to five finalist names, the next step is rarely "more debate." It is a structured scoring exercise. This matrix is the one we recommend.
The eight criteria to score
Each finalist is scored 1–10 on each criterion. The criteria are weighted by the brand's stage and category — defaults below work for most early-stage product brands.
- Brandability (weight 2x): Short, distinctive, ownable, easy to say.
- Availability (weight 2x): .com, social handles, trademark clear.
- Longevity (weight 2x): Still appropriate when the company is 5 years older.
- Emotional read (weight 1.5x): Matches the brand promise.
- Pronounceability (weight 1.5x): Unambiguous in your top three markets.
- Visual potential (weight 1x): Lends itself to a strong logomark and identity system.
- Differentiation (weight 1x): Distinct from your top three competitors.
- Internal love (weight 1x): The team would be proud to launch with this name.
How to score
Have each team member score every finalist independently. Aggregate the scores. The name with the highest weighted total is the recommended choice. The 2x weight on brandability, availability, and longevity ensures that no single "clever" name with a fatal flaw wins through emotional appeal.
If two candidates tie within 5%, run a 48-hour validation cycle (full availability check, target-buyer reaction test) and re-score with the new data. Do not let the matrix be a substitute for evidence — let it structure how you weigh the evidence.
When to override the matrix
The matrix produces a recommendation, not a verdict. The right time to override is when one specific criterion has long-term strategic weight no one has captured: a name with massive emotional resonance for a brand-first category, or a name with a domain that you can actually acquire when competitors cannot.
Override consciously, with the reasoning written down. Overriding silently teaches the team that the matrix is theater — and the next time you use it, it will be.
